Watchtower
Monitor views and engagement on a Threads post, and understand how Like Rate, Discussion Heat and Virality Rate are calculated.
Open Watchtower after publishing to see whether views and engagement are still growing. The current interface supports Threads and shows one of your own posts at a time.
Start watching a post
- Connect your Threads account, then select it in the account menu.
- Open Watchtower and choose a post from the post list.
- Use Real-time Data to view the numbers and charts. Wait for the first reading, then allow a few updates before comparing changes.
The page requests data when you select a post, then roughly every 25 seconds. LIVE means requests are scheduled. It does not confirm that every request succeeded or that Threads refreshes its statistics every 25 seconds.
When does the chart start?
The chart builds from readings taken after you open the page and select a post. Its time window is five minutes; once filled, it moves forward to show the latest five minutes of readings. The values remain the post's cumulative totals, not the engagement gained within those five minutes.
Selecting another post switches monitoring to that post. Returning to a previously selected post during the same visit restores its collected readings, but the time while it was not selected is not continuously filled in. Refreshing or leaving and returning starts a new record. This is not a complete history from publication.
100-Hour Post Curve currently displays Coming Soon. It cannot yet show or predict growth over 100 hours.
Read the four totals first
| Metric | What it means |
|---|---|
| Total Views | View count returned by the platform. Do not treat it as a count of unique viewers. |
| Total Likes | Cumulative likes on the post. |
| Total Replies | Cumulative reply count returned by the platform. |
| Total Shares | Shares reported by the platform, described as paper-plane shares in the interface. This is separate from the reposts and quotes used in Virality Rate. |
An unchanged number can mean no new activity or that the platform has not returned an update. Fields the platform does not provide are currently calculated as zero, so a zero alone does not establish that an interaction never occurred.
How the three ratios work
All three use cumulative counts from the same reading. In the formulas, V means views, L likes, C replies, R reposts and Q quotes.
Like Rate
Like Rate P divides likes by views and is displayed as a percentage. It measures likes relative to view events, not the probability that an individual viewer will like the post.
Discussion Heat
Discussion Heat H divides replies by likes and is displayed as a decimal. A value of 0.20 means there are roughly one-fifth as many replies as likes. It does not analyze sentiment: questions, support and disagreement can all raise the number.
Virality Rate
Virality Rate D divides reposts plus quotes by likes plus replies, and is displayed as a decimal. “Total Engagement” in this calculation means only likes and replies. It does not include every type of engagement, and Total Shares is not added to this formula.
If a formula's denominator is zero, its displayed ratio is currently zero. With insufficient data, that zero is not a useful performance judgment.
Check the numbers with an example
Suppose a post has 2,000 views, 100 likes, 20 replies, 8 reposts and 2 quotes. The page displays:
- Like Rate: 5.0%.
- Discussion Heat: 0.20.
- Virality Rate: 0.08.
A Virality Rate of 0.08 means reposts and quotes together are about 8% of likes and replies together. It does not mean 8% of viewers shared the post.
Start with whether the totals are increasing, then read the ratios alongside the replies. Even a handful of replies can produce high Discussion Heat when there are very few likes. Excellent on the scale is an interface cue, not proof of content quality, sales or future viral reach.
If data is missing or unchanged
Check that you selected a connected Threads account and one of its posts. If no data appears after several update attempts, try another post. If several posts fail, check the connection under your social accounts and reconnect when prompted.
Refreshing clears the current chart record, so take a screenshot first if you need it. If the issue continues, send support the account name, post link, time and error screenshot. A failed request can occur while LIVE remains visible; mention how long the numbers have been unchanged.
